  1.     Leadership skills are necessary for any student of
  2. management.  If you do not aspire to a management role, the study
  3. of the basic leadership skills will help you to be a better
  4. member of a group.  Although many people are born with a talent
  5. for leadership ability, leadership skills can also be acquired
  6. and developed.
  7.     All people are potential leaders.  If they have the desire
  8. and are given the opportunity, they can develop into effective
  9. leaders.  In a group there can be many positions of leadership at
  10. different times.  Since group goals and tasks change, positions of
  11. leadership will also change.  New leaders can emerge with each
  12. change of tasks.  Power can shift from one person to another in a
  13. truly democratic group.
  14.     Leadership in a group depends on the immediate goals of the
  15. group and the leadership qualities that the individuals are
  16. looking for at that given time. From the group an effective
  17. leader will emerge who will understand the situation at hand.
  18.     A good leader will be aware of the impact that he or she has
  19. on the group. The effective leader will use the power he or she
  20. possesses to mold the situation into the final results.  This
  21. leader will assess all factors in a group situation even when the
  22. factors point to an outcome that is opposite of his or her
  23. personal needs.  The truly effective leader will put the needs of
  24. the group above his or her own needs.
  25.     The characteristics of an effective leader are varied.  The
  26. most common charcteristics are self-confidence, intelligence,
  27. integrity, and a caring spirit.  The leader has to want the role
  28. as leader and be competent in handling new situations.  To be
  29. effective, the leader must be consistent and reliable.
